about

As a sprawling temporal and spatial hyper object - something that can be partially approached but never grasped in its entirety, the 8 years of war in Syrian appear to loop indefinitely - major cities have been repeatedly bombed to ash with a horrific number of civilian victims including those forced to live in the remains. Relayed via media documentation the consumption of these images has progressively problematized the relations and meanings attached to notions of subject and object, space and place, the real and the virtual and in so doing has created problems of ‘recognition’ or what Jonathan Crary has referred to as ‘the moral compass’ of subjects. This is supported by a chorus of claims by journalists that no one in the West cares about the fate of ordinary Syrians anymore.
Jonathan Crary. Techniques of the Observer (1990) The MIT Press, Cambridge, MA.
This novel and nuanced work deploys a set of 30 custom loops, each representing approximately 100 days of the 8 year conflict, designed to reflect on the complexities of this disaster, raise awareness of the ongoing suffering of real human beings in Syria and to examine our own moral compass with regard to these issues.
